How to Apply for an e-Passport in Nepal: Online Form, Fees and Appointment

Eligibility

• Nepali citizens applying for an ordinary passport for the first time
• Holders of an MRP or e-passport applying for renewal
• Applicants replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport, who must choose the matching replacement type rather than renewal
• Applicants correcting information in an earlier passport, who must choose Modification - Data Correction
• Applicants in Nepal using a district or area administration office for regular service

• Applicants abroad using the responsible Nepali embassy or consulate, whose local document and fee rules can differ

Required documents checklist

• □ The complete submitted pre-enrolment form with barcode and QR code, preferably printed; a saved digital original is accepted by the Department, but a screenshot is not
• □ Original Nepali citizenship certificate, or the original minor identity card for an applicant under 16
• □ Original current passport when one exists; the Department specifically lists it for renewal and may need it for other replacement or correction cases
• □ National Identity Card, National Identity Number, or proof of National ID enrolment for applicants aged 16 or over applying inside Nepal
• □ Bank voucher, online-payment evidence, or cash receipt accepted by the selected enrolment centre
• □ Original scans of the supporting documents prepared at 1 MB or less before starting the online form
• □ Migration certificate when a permanent address changed through migration
• □ Marriage registration and the husband's citizenship certificate when an applicant asks to add a husband's surname
• □ Divorce certificate when a divorced applicant asks to use only the surname shown on the citizenship certificate
• □ Any case-specific evidence requested by the issuing office where date of birth or another core detail differs across records
• □ For a minor applying first at the Department of Passports: minor identity verification from the relevant district or area administration office plus the parents' citizenship records and marriage registration as applicable

Step-by-step process

1. Open the Department of Passports website and follow its link to online.nepalpassport.gov.np. Avoid lookalike booking or payment websites.
2. Choose the correct service type: First Issuance - New, Passport Renewal, Replacement - Lost/Stolen, Replacement - Damaged, or Modification - Data Correction. A previous handwritten passport is treated as first issuance; an existing MRP or e-passport is treated as renewal when its details remain unchanged.
3. Choose 34 or 66 pages, then select the enrolment centre that is allowed to handle your case. In Nepal, regular service is through the district or area administration office linked to the citizenship or minor identity record; faster service is at the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor. Applicants abroad select the responsible Nepali mission.
4. Book an available date and time. Appointment availability belongs to the selected centre, so changing the centre can also change the available slots and the fee or service speed.
5. Enter names, surname, birth place, dates, citizenship or minor identity number, issue details, address, email and phone exactly from the source records. Enter NIN where required. Do not add titles such as Dr., Mr. or Ms. to the name field.
6. Upload clear scans of the originals in the accepted format and at 1 MB or less. Add migration, marriage, divorce, education, pension or office letters only when the facts of your case require them.
7. Review every field before selecting Apply. The Department warns that an error found after final biometric approval can require cancellation, a fresh application and another fee. An error noticed before signing at biometrics can still be raised with the operator.
8. Submit and download the full application PDF. Keep the original file on the phone and print it if possible. A cropped image or screenshot is not the form the Department asks applicants to bring.
9. Attend the selected centre at the appointment time with every original and payment evidence. The in-person sequence is form review, revenue/payment confirmation, and enrolment with photograph and biometrics.
10. Keep the application record and monitor the email, SMS or Nepal ePassport status channel. Collect the passport from the same place where the application was lodged unless a Nepali mission gives a different delivery instruction.
11. Before leaving the collection counter, compare the printed identity details with the application and source records. Report a suspected issuing-office error immediately rather than travelling with an incorrect passport.

Fees and timelines

• The Department of Passports' current fee page lists new or renewal service at the Department at NPR 12,000 for 34 pages and NPR 20,000 for 66 pages.
• For a child under 10, the same Department fee page lists NPR 9,500 for 34 pages and NPR 14,500 for 66 pages for new or renewal service.
• For a lost or damaged passport, the Department fee page lists NPR 17,000 for 34 pages and NPR 25,000 for 66 pages; for a child under 10 it lists NPR 14,500 and NPR 19,500 respectively.
• A reissue caused by an official error is listed as free on the Department fee table. This does not cover an error entered or approved by the applicant.
• The Department's application-location page says regular applications at district or area administration offices are generally delivered in 10 to 30 days, depending on distance and transport. This is guidance, not a guaranteed deadline.
• The same official page says applications at the Department of Passports are generally delivered within two working days and describes additional fast-service amounts of NPR 7,000 for 34 pages and NPR 10,000 for 66 pages above the district tariff.
• The public pages reviewed do not show one consolidated table for every district, mission and payment channel. Confirm the final amount with the selected enrolment centre or its official payment step before paying.
• District/area offices and Nepali missions provide regular service; the Department's page says faster service is available only at the Department in Kathmandu.

Common mistakes

• Choosing Renewal for a lost, damaged or data-correction case. Each has its own application type and supporting evidence.
• Booking a centre that is not allowed to handle the applicant's record or assuming every centre provides fast service.
• Taking a screenshot instead of the complete submitted PDF with its barcode and QR code.
• Leaving the National Identity Number until appointment day. It is mandatory for applicants aged 16 or over applying in Nepal, although it is not mandatory for under-16s or applications at missions abroad.
• Uploading photocopies or oversized scans instead of preparing clear scans of the originals at 1 MB or less.
• Copying an English spelling from an old informal document instead of checking the citizenship/minor identity and existing passport record.
• Approving the biometric record without checking every field. After final approval, an applicant-side error can mean cancelling the passport and paying again.
• Paying a third-party booking service or unofficial payment link before the selected enrolment centre confirms the applicable amount and channel.
• Discarding the existing passport because it is expired or contains a valid visa. Bring the original and ask the issuing centre how it will be returned or cancelled.
