How to Verify a Nepal Tax Clearance Certificate Online
A focused guide to Nepal Inland Revenue Department's public Tax Clearance Search: identify the three certificate fields, enter the fiscal year in the printed format, interpret only the returned result, troubleshoot a no-result response, and protect taxpayer information from unofficial verification sites.

Quick answer
Open the Inland Revenue Department's official Tax Clearance Search at ird.gov.np/tax-clearance. Enter the PAN, fiscal year and certificate number exactly as printed on the tax-clearance certificate, then select Search. This checks one certificate against IRD's public service; it is not an application for a new certificate and it does not replace a PAN search, company-registration check or sector-licence check. If the first search returns no result, recheck all three fields—including the fiscal-year format—before treating the certificate as questionable, then confirm with the issuing tax office through IRD's official directory.
Eligibility
- A person or organization holding a Nepal tax-clearance certificate that shows a PAN, fiscal year and certificate number
- A buyer, employer, lender, contracting authority or other reviewer who has a legitimate reason to check a certificate supplied to them
- A taxpayer checking that the identifiers on an issued certificate work in IRD's public search
- A user who needs only certificate verification; obtaining a new certificate, correcting a tax record and filing a return are separate IRD processes
Required documents checklist
- □ A clear copy of the tax-clearance certificate being checked
- □ The taxpayer's PAN exactly as printed on that certificate
- □ The fiscal year exactly as printed on the certificate, including the punctuation or year format used there
- □ The certificate number exactly as printed, without substituting an application, voucher or dispatch number
- □ A note of the date and purpose of the verification when the check supports a contract, KYC or compliance file
- □ The issuing tax office shown on the certificate, if office confirmation becomes necessary
- □ No taxpayer-portal password, OTP, bank password, citizenship upload or remote-access app is required for this public lookup
Step-by-step process
- Read the certificate before opening any website. Locate the PAN, fiscal year and certificate number, and distinguish the certificate number from a receipt, application or dispatch reference.
- Open https://ird.gov.np/tax-clearance/ directly or follow Tax Clearance Search from the official IRD homepage. Check that the domain ends in ird.gov.np before entering any identifier.
- Enter the PAN from the certificate. Do not search using a mobile number, citizenship number, company-registration number or the PAN of a related person.
- Enter the fiscal year in the same form used by the certificate and the live IRD field. The reviewed page shows a format example such as 2076.077; do not silently convert the year to an unrelated Gregorian period.
- Enter the certificate number exactly. Recheck similar-looking zeroes, letters, slashes, dashes and spaces before submitting.
- Select Search and compare only the fields the official result actually displays with the supplied certificate. A match supports that specific PAN, fiscal year and certificate reference; it does not prove facts the result does not show.
- Record the verification date and, where your organization's rules permit, save a printout or screenshot of the official result together with the original certificate. Do not circulate the full certificate in public groups.
- If no result appears, clear the fields and enter all three values again from a higher-quality copy. Also retry later if the official site is slow or unavailable.
- Ask the taxpayer for clarification when the certificate is cut off, the fiscal year is ambiguous, or the identifiers do not match. Do not edit the certificate or guess a replacement number.
- If the exact values still produce no result and the decision is material, contact the issuing office through IRD's official office directory. Describe the mismatch and provide the certificate through the channel the office authorizes.
Fees and timelines
- The reviewed public Tax Clearance Search does not display a fee for performing the lookup.
- A matching result is normally returned during the online session when the service and record are available, but IRD publishes no guaranteed response time or uptime for every search.
- A no-result screen is not, by itself, proof of forgery. Typing, fiscal-year formatting, certificate-number selection, an unclear copy, portal availability or an IRD record issue can require a retry or office confirmation.
- The lookup does not extend, renew or establish a universal validity period for the certificate. Treat the fiscal year and certificate number shown on the document as the scope of the check.
- If IRD office confirmation is required, timing depends on the responsible office and the evidence it asks for; do not promise same-day confirmation.
Common mistakes
- Using IRD's PAN Number Search instead of the separate Tax Clearance Search. The two services ask different questions.
- Entering a company-registration number, payment voucher or application reference in the certificate-number field.
- Changing the fiscal year into a guessed English-calendar year instead of following the certificate and the live field format.
- Treating a matching PAN as proof that the specific tax-clearance certificate is genuine.
- Treating a single no-result response as conclusive without checking all three fields or retrying the official service.
- Assuming the result proves that a company is active, a licence is valid, a bank account belongs to the taxpayer or a person is authorized to sign.
- Uploading the certificate, citizenship record or taxpayer-portal credentials to an unofficial checker or sending them to an unknown agent.
- Editing a PDF or screenshot to make an identifier match the search result.
The three fields IRD asks for
| IRD field | Copy it from | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| PAN | The PAN printed on the tax-clearance certificate | Using a company-registration, citizenship or related person's PAN |
| Fiscal year | The certificate's fiscal-year line | Converting it to a guessed calendar year or changing the punctuation |
| Certificate number | The certificate-number field on the issued document | Using an application, receipt, voucher or dispatch reference |
Choose the right official check
| Question | Official service | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Does this known PAN match an IRD record? | PAN Number Search | A specific tax-clearance certificate or complete tax compliance |
| Does this certificate reference match the PAN and fiscal year? | Tax Clearance Search | Company status, licence validity, signatory authority or transaction safety |
| Is this company registered with OCR? | OCR Public Company Data Portal | PAN/VAT or tax-clearance status |
| Do I need a new certificate? | The applicable IRD taxpayer or office process | The public search does not create or renew a certificate |
Independent guide and privacy boundary
NepalDocsGuide is an independent information website; it is not the Inland Revenue Department or a tax office. The public search needs the PAN, fiscal year and certificate number—not a taxpayer-portal password, OTP, bank password, citizenship upload or remote-access app. For a high-value legal, procurement or financial decision, obtain direct IRD confirmation when the official result and supplied document do not agree.
