How to Check if a Bank or Financial Institution Is Licensed in Nepal
A bilingual, evidence-first guide to checking a bank, development bank, finance company or microfinance institution against Nepal Rastra Bank's current official lists before depositing money, opening an account or trusting a financial-services offer.
Independent guide, not an official website

Quick answer
Use Nepal Rastra Bank's official BFI List and its List of BFIs archive on nrb.org.np. Match the institution's exact legal name and, where relevant, its class and branch details with what you were given. Use the newest applicable NRB list rather than an old screenshot or search result. If the name, class, branch or claimed service cannot be reconciled, pause before sending money and confirm with NRB or the institution through independently obtained official contact details.
Eligibility
- Anyone checking a Nepal bank or financial institution before opening an account, depositing savings, borrowing or transferring money
- A customer checking whether a company presented as a commercial bank, development bank, finance company or microfinance institution appears in NRB's official material
- A family member helping another person verify an institution before a large or unfamiliar payment
- A business checking the legal institution name on an invoice, financing proposal or bank instruction
- A user comparing a website, app, social-media page, QR or message with the institution named by NRB
- Anyone performing a preliminary public-record check without sharing an OTP, password, PIN, card code or remote-device access
Required documents checklist
- □ The institution's complete legal name exactly as shown on the offer, account document, website or payment instruction
- □ The claimed institution type or class, if the seller or representative gives one
- □ The branch name and location if the transaction depends on a particular branch
- □ The website domain, app-store publisher, email domain or social-media account being represented as official
- □ The beneficiary or account-holder name for any proposed transfer, kept private while comparing identity
- □ A copy or note of the advertisement, financing proposal or message if it contains a licensing claim
- □ The date you perform the NRB check because licensed-institution lists can change
- □ A private note of the exact NRB URL and result you relied on
- □ No banking password, card PIN, CVV or OTP; these are not required to read NRB's public lists
- □ For a disputed or unclear case, only the minimum evidence requested through an official complaint or confirmation channel
Step-by-step process
- Type nrb.org.np yourself or follow a trusted bookmark, and confirm that the page belongs to Nepal Rastra Bank before relying on a licensing result.
- Open NRB's BFI List for its live institution-and-branch view, and also open the List of BFIs archive when you need the regulator's dated licensed-institution publication.
- Collect the complete legal name from the financial offer or account instruction. Do not reduce the comparison to a logo, acronym or similar brand name.
- Search the current NRB material for the exact institution. If you use an archived PDF, choose the newest applicable publication shown by NRB rather than a cached older copy from a search engine.
- Check the class or institution type where the official publication provides it. NRB material distinguishes classes of licensed banks and financial institutions; do not let a seller upgrade or change its category verbally.
- If a particular branch is involved, compare the branch/location information available in NRB's live BFI List with the branch being represented to you. A real institution name does not automatically authenticate a fake branch page or contact number.
- Independently open the institution's genuine website or contact channel from a trusted source and compare the payment, account-opening or support instruction. Avoid phone numbers supplied only inside the suspicious message you are checking.
- Separate the licence check from the product check. Appearance on an NRB list supports the institution identity; it does not prove that a specific loan, deposit rate, investment pitch, QR, employee, website, app or message is authentic.
- If the legal name is absent, the class conflicts, the branch cannot be reconciled or someone pressures you to ignore the mismatch, stop the transaction and preserve the evidence instead of sending a test payment.
- For an unresolved financial-service problem, use NRB's current Financial Consumer Protection/Grievance route or contact the institution through independently verified official details. Describe what you observed; do not accuse a party solely because a portal search was temporarily unavailable.
Fees and timelines
- The public NRB BFI pages reviewed on August 6, 2026 did not present a fee for reading the lists or searching the public institution information.
- NRB does not publish one guaranteed completion time for a public licence check; site availability and the accuracy of the legal name affect how quickly you can complete it.
- The List of BFIs archive is date-sensitive. On August 6, 2026, NRB's archive displayed an English Mid June 2026 list dated July 10, 2026; always use the newest applicable publication visible when you perform your own check.
- A public directory check is not an account-opening, loan-approval or complaint-processing application. Those processes have separate requirements and timelines.
- Do not infer a product fee, interest rate, deposit rate, penalty or service charge from this guide. Confirm the exact current product terms directly with the regulated institution and applicable NRB rules.
- Complaint handling time depends on the issue and evidence. The existence of NRB's grievance portal does not guarantee a decision date, refund or outcome.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a familiar logo without checking the exact legal institution name
- Using an old PDF or screenshot after NRB has published a newer licensed-institution list
- Assuming every company containing words such as bank, finance or microfinance has the licence it claims
- Finding the real institution but failing to verify that the website, app, branch, employee or payment recipient actually belongs to it
- Treating a matching institution name as proof of a particular loan, deposit or investment offer
- Ignoring a different legal suffix or similar-looking company name
- Calling a missing search result proof of fraud without checking spelling, the newest list and NRB's official confirmation route
- Following a sponsored search result or message link without confirming the nrb.org.np domain
- Sending a small test transfer to an unresolved beneficiary in order to see whether it works
- Sharing an OTP, PIN, password, CVV, screen-share session or remote-access code while supposedly performing a public licence check
- Publishing another person's account number or identity document while asking for help
- Assuming NRB licensing means every financial product is risk-free or guaranteed
Licence check, branch check and offer check are different
| Check | What it can tell you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| NRB licensed-institution list | Whether the legal institution appears in the regulator's applicable published material | That a particular message, employee, website or product offer is genuine |
| NRB BFI/branch view | Useful official branch/location information for the selected institution | That the phone number or QR sent to you belongs to that branch |
| Institution's own verified channel | Whether the institution recognizes the product, contact or payment instruction | That the product is suitable for you or free from financial risk |
| NRB grievance route | A regulator-run route for financial-consumer grievances | A guaranteed refund, deadline or result |
Use the newest NRB list, not a memorized count
NRB maintains a live BFI page and a dated List of BFIs archive. The archive reviewed on August 6, 2026 showed newer 2026 entries, including an English Mid June 2026 publication dated July 10, 2026. Institution names, mergers, classes and branch information can change, so this guide intentionally does not freeze a count of banks or institutions. Re-check NRB on the day your decision matters.
What a match means
| Observation | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|
| Exact legal name appears in current NRB material | Strong evidence that NRB identifies that legal institution in the applicable official list |
| A similar name appears | Not enough; compare the complete name and institution type |
| Institution exists, but payment goes to an unrelated person | The institution match does not authenticate the payment; stop and verify independently |
| No result after careful checking | An unresolved mismatch; check the newest source and ask NRB rather than guessing |
A real bank name can be impersonated
Scammers can copy the name, logo, branch address and staff photos of a genuine institution. The NRB list verifies the institution record, not the sender of a WhatsApp message, social account, look-alike domain or payment QR. Never use a licence match as the only payment check.
If the institution or branch does not match
Treat the mismatch as unresolved until authoritative evidence explains it.
- 1Recheck the complete legal name and spelling.
- 2Open the newest applicable entry in NRB's List of BFIs archive.
- 3Compare the institution type or class where shown.
- 4Check the branch in NRB's live BFI view when branch identity matters.
- 5Contact the real institution using a number or domain obtained independently.
- 6Do not send a test payment to prove the recipient exists.
- 7Preserve the suspicious URL, message, account name and time without publishing private data.
- 8Use NRB's consumer-protection/grievance route when official clarification or a complaint is appropriate.
Three identities must line up
For a financial transaction, separately establish (1) the regulated legal institution, (2) the genuine branch/site/person you are dealing with, and (3) the authorized beneficiary or payment path. A pass at step 1 cannot substitute for steps 2 and 3.
