Independent guide, not an official website

Nepal Docs Guide is not affiliated with the Government of Nepal. This guide helps you prepare, but official portals and offices control final rules, fees, forms, and timelines.

Quick answer

Renew through the transport office and online route currently assigned to your licence. Bagmati Province's Kalanki licence office says a holder may visit with the original citizenship certificate and original driving licence, or start through the Department's new portal: sign in, choose License Renewal, enter the licence number and issuing office, verify the fetched record, select an appointment office, upload the requested files, pay only the amount generated, and attend with the reference card, receipt and originals. Its current page also requires the medical result to be recorded through the accepted online process. Other provinces and offices can use different portals, payment channels, document prompts and late-fee rules, so confirm the selected office before paying.

Eligibility

  • A holder of an existing Nepali driving licence who needs the same licence record renewed
  • A holder whose licence is approaching expiry or has expired and who wants the official system to calculate the applicable renewal amount or late charge
  • A holder able to present the original licence and identity record to the responsible transport office when requested
  • This guide does not cover a first licence, category addition, lost-card duplicate, data correction or foreign-licence conversion; those services can require different forms and checks

Required documents checklist

  • The original current or expired driving licence; the Kalanki licence office lists the original licence for renewal
  • The original citizenship certificate; the same office lists original citizenship for the counter route
  • The online renewal application or reference card generated by the current portal when the online route is used
  • The official payment receipt, voucher or transaction reference generated for the renewal record
  • The medical or fitness result recorded through the provider and system accepted by the selected office; Kalanki's current renewal page describes an online medical report as mandatory
  • Clear digital images of citizenship, the old licence and a passport-size photograph when the live portal requests those uploads
  • A reachable mobile number controlled by the licence holder for account verification, appointment messages and recovery
  • Any written record-correction instruction if the fetched licence name, category, number, issuing office or identity details do not match the originals

Step-by-step process

  1. Read the current renewal page or citizen charter of the licence office you can attend. Transport services and revenue are administered through provincial offices, so confirm that the office accepts your licence record and which portal it currently uses.
  2. Check the licence number, issuing office, vehicle categories, name, date of birth and expiry date on the old card or official record. Photograph both sides for reference, but keep the original ready.
  3. If the selected office permits a counter-first renewal, follow its current queue and document instruction. Kalanki currently says a holder may attend with the original citizenship certificate and original driving licence.
  4. For the online route described by Kalanki, open the official application portal linked by the office. Sign in with an account and mobile number you control; create and OTP-verify an account only if one does not already exist.
  5. Choose License Renewal rather than New Licence, Add Category, Duplicate or Correction. Enter the licence number and issuing district or office, fetch the old record, and stop if the retrieved person, category or office is wrong.
  6. Select the office you can attend and an available appointment date. Read the live upload list and supply the citizenship, old-licence, photograph or other files only in the requested format.
  7. Complete the medical or fitness step through the route recognized by the selected office. Do not buy a handwritten certificate from an unverified person or assume an old medical record is still linked.
  8. Review the renewal amount and any late charge shown by the official system or confirmed by the office. Pay only through the displayed channel and save the successful receipt and transaction reference.
  9. Print or save the complete renewal application or reference card. On the appointed date, attend the selected office with that record, the receipt, original citizenship certificate and original licence.
  10. Before leaving the counter, confirm what proves the licence record was renewed, how to correct a failed transaction, and whether the receipt or temporary record must be carried until the smart card is printed.
  11. Use the Department or office's current print and collection notice for the card. Renewal of the record and physical smart-card printing are separate stages.

Fees and timelines

  • The reviewed official pages do not provide one dependable nationwide renewal total. The base charge, category treatment and late amount can depend on provincial law, the expiry period and the record shown by the selected office.
  • Current official Bagmati pages use different no-penalty wording: the Ekantakuna FAQ says renewal should be completed within 90 days after validity ends, while Kalanki's renewal page says no fine within one year. Because those statements are not a single national fee rule, this guide does not choose one as universal. Ask the selected office and use the amount generated for the licence.
  • Never calculate a late fine from an old blog or pay an agent's personal account. Save the official calculation, receipt and date in case the payment does not attach to the renewal record.
  • An online application can be prepared in one sitting, but appointment supply, a licence-data mismatch, medical synchronization, payment reconciliation and office closures can extend completion.
  • The renewed record can be usable before a replacement smart card is printed, but only the responsible office can tell you which receipt or interim proof it accepts and when the card is ready.

Common mistakes

  • Opening New Licence or Add Category instead of the renewal service
  • Entering the visible card number without checking the issuing office needed to fetch the old record
  • Continuing after the portal retrieves another spelling, person, category or office
  • Assuming every province follows the same portal screen, grace period, fee or appointment rule
  • Paying before the official system identifies the renewal record and amount
  • Using an unrecognized medical certificate that does not appear in the accepted system
  • Leaving the office with only a payment message and no renewal reference or receipt
  • Treating smart-card print status as the same thing as renewal approval
  • Letting an agent control the mobile number, OTP, login and only copy of the receipt

Do not rely on one national late-fee quote

Transport revenue and service instructions can differ by province and change through fiscal legislation. Even current Bagmati office pages use different grace-period wording. Let the selected office identify the rule and the official system calculate the amount for your licence.
